The Doors !

Yesterday although i had some work ..i was absolutely bored and was going through the songs i had on my comp when i came across this folder full of songs by Doors…although i had heard a lot about Jim Morrison..the only songs i probably heard were Riders on the Storm,Roadhouse blues and my favorite Alabama song(yeah the whiskey bar one :D )

But i didn’t really want to sit and listen to all of it..so despite a red busy status on gtalk…i went ahead and pinged this buddy of mine who i knew was an ardent Jim Morrison fan…i just asked him to list out his favorite songs by Doors and this is the list he came up with and told me if i don’t have any of those just let him know he’ll send me :)

1.Riders on Storm

2.Roadhouse Blues

3.Angels and Sailors

4.Stoned Immaculate

5.Strange days

6.L.A.Woman(Mojo Rising)

7.Waiting for the sun

8.Break on through to the other side

9.Light my fire

10. Ghost song

I had all of those except for Angels and Sailors and Stoned Immaculate…when i asked him for those this is what he had to say “That’s a rare album from Doors. It’ called an American Prayer. It was released after Jim Morrison’s death. Its his poems for which the resta the band gave music to”

Hmm now that was very enlightening…coupla minutes later he tells me “Hey forgot to mention The End…that’s awesome..as in it’s too good ..brilliant…” to which i asked him “does it happen to feature on the OST of Apocalypse now?”

and he said “yeah..the movie begins with the song and its kinda haunting”

The End

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I’ll never look into your eyes…again

Can you picture what will be
So limitless and free
Desperately in need…of some…stranger’s hand
In a…desperate land

Lost in a Roman…wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane
All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah

There’s danger on the edge of town
Ride the King’s highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby

Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake is long, seven miles
Ride the snake…he’s old, and his skin is cold

The west is the best
The west is the best
Get here, and we’ll do the rest

The blue bus is callin’ us
The blue bus is callin’ us
Driver, where you taken’ us

The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and…then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door…and he looked inside
Father, yes son, I want to kill you
Mother…I want to…fuck you

C’mon baby, take a chance with us
C’mon baby, take a chance with us
C’mon baby, take a chance with us
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin’ a blue rock
On a blue bus
Doin’ a blue rock
C’mon, yeah

Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

It hurts to set you free
But you’ll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die

This is the end

It was my song of the day ! mailed a few friends and added a line “I haven’t seen Apocalypse now :(

One really enthusiastic chap sent me this very enlightening reply which am putting down here :)

You OUGHT to see it. It’s a classic war movie! I don’t think any other vietnam war movie can match Apocalypse. Maybe Platoon and Full metal jacket come second and third. The entire song ‘The end’ has been adapted as a sort of frame setting for the movie. Various parts of the song is played at crucial scenes, and the final showdown where Martin Sheen slaughters Marlon Brando is the end of the song. You should also read Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, from which the Coppolla had adapted the script. Incidentally, when Jim Morrison died due to an overdose of drugs he was said to have been listening to The End :)

And by the way, the lyrics of this song was considered to be very disturbing, since it had an overtone of oedipal complex, when he says: mother… i want to… fuck you. It was banned at many places from being played. Though, Morrison never actually says the word fuck… it is not particularly not clear what he says.

Oedipus was this Greek dude who killed his dad and got married to his mother :-| So whichever dude has a kind of sexual longing towards his own mother, is said to be suffering from Oedipus complex. With ladies having a thing for towards their dad they call it as Electra complex. Weird world! :-/

That adds three more movies to my “to-watch-movies-list” and one book to my “to-read-books-list”!

on the same note, u shd watch the movie ‘The Doors’ by Oliver Stone, to better understand the life philosophy and the thinking behind one of the greatest artiste/band ever… as in jim morrison was deeply influenced by varied philosophies and all his songs has something to do with one or the other… his whole life he has lived according to the things he believed in..
trivia: mojo rising is an anagram of jim morrison made by himself.. he used to sign mojo rising for autographs n all!..
